ORJIP Ocean Energy will be hosting a workshop in Edinburgh on 22nd Feb to align with ICOE 2016. The workshop will be held in co-operation with UHI, Annex IV, ICIT Heriot Watt, ORE Catapult and the MERIKA project and aims to bring together key science stakeholders to explore critical questions for monitoring and mitigation around marine renewable energy devices and arrays. One of the focusses of the workshop will be Collision Risk with Tidal Turbines which is one of the high priority research areas identified for ORJIP Ocean Energy.

The second Steering Group meeting for ORJIP Ocean Energy was held in London on 13th January 2016. The meeting focussed on pushing forward high priority research projects and upcoming opportunities for wider learning were discussed with devices going into the water at Ramsey Sound and hopefully soon at EMEC and MeyGen. Funding was also a focus, both for the high priority projects and the wider ORJIP Ocean Energy programme.

The first ORJIP Ocean Energy Forward Look was sent out to the Network on 3rd August 2015. This first version of the Forward Look includes a prioritised list of strategic research projects to address key EIA/HRA issues and sets out the purpose and broad scope of the research projects necessary to meeting ORJIP Ocean Energy’s overall aim.

ORJIP Ocean Energy was recently involved in the Wave & Tidal Demonstration Zone Consenting Workshop in Cardiff alongside The Crown Estate, Welsh Government, NRW, Marine Scotland, MMO, SNH and demo zone managers. Joseph Kidd was invited to the workshop by The Crown Estate in his role as Secretariat of the ORJIP Ocean Energy and explored how the programme can support the consenting of the demo zones as well the demo zones being used as a focus for some ORJIP’s environmental research.

The first Steering group meeting for ORJIP Ocean Energy took place on 16th June 2015 in Edinburgh. The kick-off meeting was attended by representatives of the Project Sponsors - TCE, Marine Scotland, and Welsh Government together with Steering Group members NRW, SNH, DOE NI, and industry representation from Open Hydro, DP Energy and Tidal Lagoon Power.

The ORJIP Ocean Energy project sponsors, The Crown Estate, Marine Scotland and Welsh Government, have awarded the contract to carry out the Secretariat function for the duration of the pilot phase to Aquatera Ltd and their delivery partners MarineSpace Ltd and the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC).

The Secretariat be responsible for the day-to-day running of the programme and to connect and coordinate the ORJIP Ocean Energy members.
